Hi ,
I am from Shirebrook but left there to live in Canada in 1973.
I worked in most of the pits in the North Derbyshire area and have a few mining lamps
and just half a dozen checks or motties I think some pits called them.
I did have an old pair of Limmers but I lost them during one of my moves unfortunately.
I will be visiting Shirebrook at the end of this month for a couple of days
if you would be interested in trading a couple of your checks for a couple of mine
that I have doubles of.
I have an extra large round " N.C.B. Bevercotes Coliery "
and an extra smaller round " Warsop Main "
Thanks again

Hello Shirebrook,
I have only just come across this fantastic site.
I am David Holden and was born in Shirebrook in 1945
and lived on York Road and sometimes at my aunts on Central Drive.
I left Shirebrook in 1975 but visited regularly until my mum died some years ago.
I am amazed at the memories your photos have brought back,
I have seen photos of old classmates ie Barry Lyons
and photos of some of the guys I used to know in my teens.
The letter from Judy Moor also mentions old friends like
Mac Green and Val Payne (I too was at the wedding)
and many other names bring back many memories.
Many people would remember my uncle Bill (Westby)
who was renouned all over England for his skill as a tattooist.
Carter Lane Boys was my school when Charlie Ray was head
and Mettam was music teacher, we all belonged to 'Houses' like Royce and Arkwrite etc.
Mine was Chantry. After school hours were spent on Park Road Rec
or down Pleasely Vale. Later on when we were in our late teens it was
Mansfield Palais and pubs like the Horse and Jocky,
I worked behind the bar for a while with a mate named Mick Hough
and had a joint 21st birthday party at his cousins house on Market Street.
Her name is or was then, Lyn Cooper and we have just become reaquainted through e:mail.
Fantastic times. I could go on forever.
I know I only live 20 odd miles away in Nottingham
but 'my' Shirebrook has been brought vividly back by you
and for that I can't thank you enough.
If anybody does remember me I would be more than happy to hear from them.
Thanks again

David Holden

Hi Shirebrook,
What a wonderful site!
My great grandfather Joseph Randall
moved to work at Shirebrook pit when it first opened.
Both my grandfathers/great uncles worked there
and my mother was born in Rock Cottages.
What a surprise to see a picture on your site.
Are there any Randalls, Shipmans,
Abrahams' still living there? Pat Abrahams.

Hi Glenn,
The other day I was looking around the Shirebrook site
( I now collect mining checks ) and I found a page with
Email messages on from past Shirebrook people - I now live in Oxfordshire.
Maybe this was under your guestbook?.
Anyway the message was from Malcolm Buttery - his parents ran
Simpsons on Main Street and I was looking for his return Email address.
I mentioned this to my Dad ( now 87years ) and he said
" Tell Malcolm not to leave oil on by back yard next time he services his motorbike!
apparantly Malcom used to service his 'bike on the backyard
behind the shop & leave a mess.I was born in 1947 & my
Dad ran ' Broughs ' shoe shop next door to Simpsons!
I used to press my nose against their shop window looking at all the
Dinky toys & water pistols etc.
I remember there were a few steps down into the shop as with my father's
and the Dan Dare comics etc where on the left counter.
On the other side to 'Broughs' was Harry Gilbert the cobbler.
As a young boy in school holidays I spent many hours watching
Harry mend shoes under the yellow glow of an old gas lamp,
after removing the offending sole he would glue or stitch the re-placement
and then trim the excess off with strange sharp-looking tools.
Then he used to hold all the nails needed in his mouth/lips.
my Dad never had a watch & if he wanted to check the time he'd go to the door
& look at the clock on the Co-Op! If anyone has a 'photograph of ' Broughs '
I would very much like a copy,
somewhere I have a 'photo of my father standing at the counter in the shop but I can't find it!!!

With best regards
Andy Johnson

My name is Rachel Stafford and I have just had the pleasure of finding
your web site. My home for the past twenty five years is in Arizona,
USA. I was born and raised in Shirebrook and have happy and unhappy
memories of my childhood. We lived on Merchant Street and our kitchen
window overlooked the gasworks and Shirebrook pit. We had no hot water,
a 'one-holer' that was at the bottom of the yard which was emptied once
a week by men who mostly lived on Market Street. My sister has lived all
her life in Shirebrook and she now lives on Central Drive. I visited her
three years ago and saw that everything I had known had disappeared. I
would really like to correspond with someone who is familiar with
Shirebrook as it was when I was a child. I left school????? at the
tender age of fourteen and went into private service. You probably have
realized that I am now in my early sixties and remember the hardships we
children endured because of the poverty that was all around us. My
maiden name was Elliott and my brother George and my brother Frank
worked on the pit front all their working lives until injuries forced
them to stop. We had no bathroom. Your web site is good and I hope that
many people appreciate it as much as I.

Sincerely,
Rachel Stafford
